The unfolding crisis in Afghanistan

As we are all aware, the U.S. departure from Afghanistan has created a crisis and a lot of unknowns. This tragedy continues to unfold before our very eyes. A lot of people want to know what they can do to help and support this community. Here is what is going on so far: Family, colleagues and community workers are currently fighting for individual refugee cases. As of this time, we do not know how many refugees the federal government is bringing to the U.S., nor how many people will be placed in Oregon.

Afghan refugees are not new to the Portland area. They have been one of the largest demographics placed here in recent years. The most significant assistance you can provide at this time is the same support IRCO needs every day from community members like you: Supplies, monetary donations and awareness. If you are interested in hosting a supply drive, please email fundraise@irco.org. Follow us on social media and sign up for our e-newsletter for updated news and share with your circle of contacts.

IRCO stands in solidarity with our Afghan staff members and communities facing injustice, harm and threat as the Taliban has seized most of Afghanistan. We are horrified at the injustices and harm already experienced by the Afghan people, even more so in the last few weeks.

In all their diversity, the people of Afghanistan find themselves at the toxic intersection of decades of war, political and economic instability, the total collapse of essential services for clean water to safe health care. Moreover, the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic add to the misery and gravity of the situation faced by the Afghan people.

This situation reminds many of us, who have fled our war-torn countries and the challenging, painful, beyond worrisome time for you and your family. We will continue to work with our communities and government agencies to bring the people to safety. We want you to know we are here for you and want to help in any way we can.

Together, we will emerge from this stronger.
